An interest in code shows up earlier than it seems, so it is important to notice it in time
Many parents wonder whether programming is right for their child. There is no universal test, but there are signs that help you see whether the world of technology will appeal to them.
What should you look out for?
- your child likes to figure out how games and apps work;
- asks “why does it work exactly like that?”;
- enjoys puzzles and logic problems;
- loves building construction sets and making up their own game rules;
- spends time at the computer not only playing games.
If you recognised your child in at least two of these points, it is a good reason to try a first programming lesson.
How can you support that interest?
The main rule is not to turn getting to know IT into a chore. Start with playful formats: visual programming, simple animations and stories. Your child should see the result of their work quickly, because that keeps them motivated.
Creating together works well too: suggest that your child invents their own game and then work out together what it is made of.
When should you start?
The best age for a first introduction to programming is 6–8. At this age children can already focus on a task, and playful tools such as Scratch make learning a natural continuation of play.
